Villacana: Getting Here

To Villacana:

From Malaga Airport:

Throughout the first part of your journey keep in mind that the signs you are following are for Cadiz and/or Algeciras.

When you come out of the airport, you come to a roundabout, with a San Miguel factory ahead. Go straight on, second exit, keeping to the right hand lane with the San Miguel factory on your right. DO NOT go over fly over. The right hand lane will take you to the right, and you join a dual carriage way via a slip road. Carry along here for about 3km, keeping right, until you see a large blue Autovia A7 sign over the right hand lane, to Algeciras and Benalmadena. Take this lane and go up the slip road to join the motorway (you have your own lane as you join). As soon as possible get into the middle lane as the right hand lane will become the dedicated Torremolinos exit lane.

You now have choices, take the Toll road, Peaje, AP7, or the A7. The Tolls are around 10 euros for the whole journey and cards can be used if your euros are tucked away. The instructions in blue are for the Toll road route.

Autopista AP7

The road will split into 4 lanes and this is clearly signed as the left hand 2 lanes being for the toll road AP7 and the right hand for the A7 dual carriageway. This route is faster and easier. There will be 2 tolls to go through, one at Calahonda and one at San Pedro de Alcantara, and the total charge is usually not in excess of 10 euros. In between the 2 toll booths the A7 and AP7 merge around Marbella, and then split in the same way as before, so stay left for the toll road.

A few kilometers after the San Pedro toll booth you will pass a large service area each side of the road, and shortly there are signs to Estepona (este). Take this turning, going under the road to join the A7 eastbound. Travel along this road for about 10 minutes, being aware of a post by the side of the road marking each km number, and you want to turn off after a left hand bend at km164. Now go to this instruction in the black directions

Autovia A7

The road will split into 4 lanes, clearly signposted with the left hand 2 being the toll road, so stay right for the non paying option. This road will take you along the coast, at one point around Marbella merging with the AP7, and then splitting into 4 lanes once more, and again you stay right.

If you have ever been before you will be pleased to know that the tunnel in San Pedro de Alcantara is now open. Once past San Pedro de Alcantara, start being aware of each km post by the road, each is numbered. The road exits correspond with these numbers too, so never appear to be logical at first. After km 166, then 165 look over to the other side of the road and you will hopefully see a hedge with VILLACANA in large white letters, this is where you are heading for, but you have to go a way past. Carry on until you see a large white sign “Cambio de Sentido 1200m”, and then take a slip road off to the right just after km post 163. At the roundabout turn right, signed to A7 Marbella Malaga, you will go under the road. Join with caution the A7 eastbound. Now look out for the turning after Km164.

This turn off is right by a sign which says “Cancelada 500m”. Carry straight on up the slip road, past Park Beach, and just after a bus lay by you will see the sign Albayalde, turn right, the hedge with big white VILLACANA letters is on your right, and for time share bookings only this is where the MacDonald Office is located. Carrying on down the road, it will curve to the right, and the Villacana car park is then on the left through the second barrier at the security gate.

The office is at the end of the car park.

From: Gibraltar Airport:

It is easier to arrange to collect your hire car on the Spanish side of the border to avoid the queues which can be hours long. Most of the car hire offices have this facility, and are on the opposite side of the road as you walk out of Gibraltar.

The direction you will leave La Linea is to the West, so with your back to the rock you would be driving to your left along the sea front.

So, heading west you may see an oil refinery on your left after 5 or so kms. You will go over a large roundabout and start climbing uphill, you are on a dual carriageway and there are no houses to speak of just here. Now watch carefully for the signs for the right hand turn to Estepona, and take this slip road to join the A7. The road you were on will be turning to the left to Algeciras, as you leave it. The journey time to Estepona from here is about 25 minutes. It is far easier if you take the left had option of the Toll road at Torreguadiaro, the Toll is not expensive and most cards are accepted if your euros are tucked away. It is fairly straight forward to follow the signs to Marbella, Estepona or Malaga if you choose the coast road. The toll road merges at Estepona briefly with the A7, and when you have the option to take the Toll road again stay right and do not take the Toll road.

Start taking note of the fact that there are posts by the road marking each km with the relevant number on. The road exits match these numbers. Look out for KM 164 and take the exit.
